Reading A-Z resources organized into weekly content-based units and differentiated instruction options. Assess reading fluency with two types of assessments. The first type of fluency assessment is a one-minute timed reading of a passage to measure the number and accuracy of words read.

There is a fluency passage for each level, F through Z. There are three of these assessments, each with more difficult sentences than the preceding one.
View our Fluency Standards Table for additional information about recommended reading rates. Administer a one-minute reading, starting the stopwatch when the student begins the first word of the passage the student will not read titles.
Tell the student that if she or he has trouble struggling for more than 3 to 5 secondsyou will say the word so she or he can keep reading. After one minute, say "Stop," stop the stopwatch, and circle the last word read. During the reading, resist the urge to correct mistakes. Mistakes and self-correction will be accounted for in the score. If the student has extreme difficulty, stop the test. Reassure the student that she or he will redo the assessment after further reading practice.
You should select a lower level passage for the next assessment. Follow along on your copy word by word with your pencil. Mark a dash above words skipped. Errors include:. The Reading Sentences forms are used as an additional comprehension check to ensure that students attend to both speed and meaning.
As the Reading Sentences forms are an assessment of the student's comprehension of sentences in a timed reading environment, and the student is required to answer the questions, there is no target words-per-minute standard.

My students will be given ample opportunities to learn and use skills necessary to increase performance on Oral Reading Fluency benchmark. I will work with my grade level counterpart to ensure that we are creating lessons that target the components Oral Reading Fluency. Strengths: I work well with others, and consider myself a team player. I am willing to consider new and different methods and ideas based on my students needs.
This means each student will have an ambitious Oral Reading Fluency Goal to achieve. By the last day of the month, 2 student ORF will be administered, scored, and analyzed for monthly progress. By May 31, meet with administrators and fellow colleagues to discuss overall student growth.

Assign a variety of fluency experts throughout each unit that will vary in length and instructional time. Develop and implement grade appropriate lessons focusing on fluency.

By the end of the year, they will build up to reading 90 words a minute. Fluency also means the reader can read the same way as they talk, using expression and changing their voice to reflect what is happening in the story. They begin to develop their own fluency when they can hear how you change your expression throughout a story and read with ease. Have them match your expressions and speed after you demonstrate. We must prevent children from experiencing frustration as they try to read. When children get in the swing of reading, they still are reading word-by-word, decoding more quickly but not knowing how to craft their voice into a story that is pleasing to hear.
Demonstrate how a robot would read a sentence from their favorite book. Now have them read the sentence and ask them how they can make it sound better. The most helpful thing you can do for your child is to pinpoint where they need help and help them fix it. If they skip a word or mispronounce have them read the sentence again. Read it again for a third time. This activity, in less than five minutes, shows your child that they have the power and control over how the story sounds.
A chorus read is when you and your child read at the same time, like how singers sing in a chorus! Pick a paragraph in a story and let your child get practice in reading fluently with you. While reading a book to your child, have them repeat a sentence from the story after you have read it. Let them practice making their voice sound natural and changing the tone as the sentence ends. If a character in the story speaks, model how they talk, then have your child repeat after you.
Have your child re-read their favorite poem each night. Using any picture book, have your child read it as though it was a performance, acting out each page from the story.
These are sample 2nd grade reading passages that are used for timed reading to show parents how their child is tested. Once the student begins, they are timed for one minute and the teacher follows along on a copy of the same passage.
The teacher notes the places where your child skipped words or misread. After the minute stops, the child stops reading and the teacher counts the number of words read correctly.
